What insulation does Filson use in our Jackets?

Filson insulated jackets use several different insulations. All-natural goose down is one of our favorites due to its extremely high warmth-to-weight ratio. In weather where the insulation may get wet, PrimaLoft® makes a great alternative to down. This synthetic fill was developed for the U.S. military as an alternative that could mimic down’s lightweight compressibility yet continue to perform when wet. For jackets with thicker, heavier shell fabrics that don’t benefit from the lightweight compressibility of down and PrimaLoft, unbranded polyester insulations can offer comparable warmth at lower cost. 

What Shell Materials are Used?

Filson insulated Jackets are made with a range of shell materials depending on their intended uses. Jackets and vests designed for use in thorny brush or high-abrasion situations are often made with waxed cotton. Conversely, our Ultralight Jackets and Vests are designed to get packed into tight spaces, and employ a lightweight ripstop nylon. Our Down Cruiser Jackets and Vests use waxed cotton shell fabrics to keep the goose down dry and maintain its insulating ability.

How to Care for Insulated Jackets?

Different shell fabrics and insulations have different care instructions. Insulated jackets and vests with waxed cotton shell fabrics should only be wiped or brushed clean. Washing or dry-cleaning waxed fabrics will eliminate their water resistance. Filson insulated wool jackets and vests should be dry cleaned. As a general rule, insulated jackets with nylon or polyester shell fabric should be washed cold and tumble-dried at a low temperature. Each Filson jacket has a detailed care instruction tag sewn to the interior.
